Detailed treatment guide

Medical Oncology

Medical oncology is the branch of cancer care concerned with systemic treatments and the clinical planning that surrounds them. A medical oncologist reviews the available clinical information and discusses which treatment approaches may be appropriate for the individual situation.

What medical oncology covers

Medical oncology can involve chemotherapy, targeted therapy, hormonal therapy, immunotherapy and combinations of treatments. The treatment selected depends on the cancer type, extent of disease, pathology, biomarker information, previous treatment and the patient's overall clinical condition.

How treatment planning is approached

Treatment planning is individualized rather than based on a single diagnosis label. The treating team may review pathology and imaging reports, laboratory results, previous treatment, current medicines and other medical conditions before discussing the available options.

Questions patients can prepare

Useful questions include: What is the diagnosis and stage? What is the purpose of the proposed treatment? Are additional pathology or biomarker tests needed? How is treatment given? What monitoring is required? Which symptoms should be reported promptly?

Monitoring and follow-up

During systemic treatment, the clinical team monitors the patient's response and treatment-related effects. Treatment schedules can be adjusted when clinically necessary. Follow-up after treatment depends on the cancer and the individual's treatment plan.
