Detailed treatment guide

Chemotherapy

Chemotherapy uses medicines to kill cancer cells or stop their growth. It can be used to treat cancer, reduce the chance of recurrence in selected settings, control cancer growth, or relieve symptoms caused by cancer. The role of chemotherapy varies by cancer type and treatment intent.

How chemotherapy is planned

The medicines and schedule depend on the type and extent of cancer, previous treatments and other health conditions. Chemotherapy may be used alone or alongside treatments such as surgery, radiation, targeted therapy or immunotherapy when clinically appropriate.

Cycles and treatment visits

Chemotherapy is often delivered in cycles. A cycle can include a treatment period followed by a rest period that allows the body to recover. The exact number and timing of visits vary substantially between treatment plans.

How it may be given

Chemotherapy can be administered through a vein, by mouth or by other routes depending on the medicine and cancer. Intravenous chemotherapy may be delivered through a peripheral IV, catheter or implanted port.

Side effects and monitoring

Chemotherapy can affect healthy fast-growing cells as well as cancer cells, so side effects vary by medicine and dose. Patients should discuss expected effects, monitoring requirements and symptoms that need prompt medical attention with their treating team.
